Social scientists and psychologists sometimes overgeneralize from data and make claims about non-rational determinants of judgment which imply a relativism that is indefensible. Still, the data cannot be ignored by a sound epistemology. This paper explores the problem and points to some of the conditions for an adequate treatment.

Grisez began exploring the logic of moral reasoning in 1959, and in this paper he tries to work out an account of moral judgment.
However, he did not yet understand the principles of practical reasoning, and the paper evidences the Aristotelian and Thomistic framework out of which he was about to develop his later, original thought.
The paper was delivered at the 1962 meeting of the American Catholic Philosophical Association. It was published in the Proceedings, and is copyright © American Catholic Philosophical Association 1962, all rights reserved.
